Is there a way to lower nitrates and or nitrites without using chemical additives to your water?

I have a 29 gallon tank with 3 fish left in it after an apparent mass suicide over the past week.

The only chemicals I use in my tank is Prime when I do water changes. Other than, water changes should be the only thing you need to do.

How long has the tank been set up? Is it still cycling? If so that could explain the fish deaths (sorry about that :(). What are you ammonia, nitrite, nitrate numbers?

Also I agree with others, large frequent water changes are best, but you might also want to find out the reason why the levels are so high (unless the tank is still cycling, then that would explain it). This article might help: I just learned about cycling but I already have fish. What now?!
