I have a 46 gallon now front tank

Is 5 months old so I'm very new
I've read I don't need bio balls in my canister
So I removed them slowly and put in l r rubble .
Now reading with live rock my canister filer is not really necessary.
In fact may be the source of high nitrates???
Any advice???

Oops misspelled canister filter

I would just get rid of it. Slowly take out the rubble (a little bit each time you do a water change), and get rid of the canister filter. Do you have a sump?

No sump yet not enough room under current tank stand

I have never really understood the whole canister filter thing. Putting live rock in a sump/refugium is a great idea, because you can grow things like algae (you would put a light over the sump/fuge), and critters would grow, like feather dusters, which has huge filtering abilities. Putting live rock and stuff into a canister filter...where there is no light...how are things supposed to grow?!

Thanks I will build new stand and work on sump

In future
