Would crushed coral be a good substrate for my refugium or would sand be better? I want something that will settle quickly

If you use crushed coral, make sure you have a filter sock before it. It will quickly collect detritus and become a nutrient sink. You'll have to vacuum it from time to time. I would suggest something a bit smaller.

I have some left over pool filter sand would that work or would I be better off picking up some live sand to put in there? Thanks for your help

Na...pool filter sand should work fine. Rinse it well and toss it in!
