I am wondering when/ or if I change my sponge on my Discus tank. Wondering IF because I would think it contains beneficial bacteria on it and IF I do, then how often?

Little background info as this tank is different and why I'm wondering what I should be doing here:

This tank has a freshwater sump, refugium style. I have heard of Discus keepers with a sponge as their filter medium and well, that's more or less what I have… granted, it follows a 3 stage sump, starting with socks, refugium style stocked heavily with plants in the middle, and the entire thing basically leads to final stage that's a SPONGE… hehe…

Any suggestions on if that sponge needs tossed every now and then OR does that sponge contain a bacteria filled dream of goodness?

IMO I would run two sponges then you can rinse one out in a bucket of tank water while leaving the other loaded with BB and alternate every two or three weeks.
