Cleaning emperor 280 filter

I got an aquarium from someone who had it for awhile they didn't do any maintenance on anything and I've been trying to get all water parameters under control. I would like to know the best way to clean the filter system itself without hurting my fish. Thanks.

I think part by part just in case. So maybe one section one week, the next another week. That way you don't run the risk of having lost the entire bacterial population all at once.
