So I ordered a clown knife from my lfs and when it came in it was about 4" but it only one eye. According to them the eye was healed and would be fine. Is this really fine in your opinions.

If you mean it looks like the eye was never supposed to be there then it is probably healed. I know of fish that have lived long lives even though they lost an eye.

It should be fine as long as he seems to be moving around fine in his tank at the store and seems to be aware of others in the tank. Maybe see if other fish try to bully him and how he reacts?

Losing one eye isn't a big deal for an aquarium fish unless it's tankmates are too rough. If the skin has completely grown over the socket it may have been born that way. I've seen plenty of one-eyed fish, but they all had a distinctly missing or cloudy (blind) eye.
