Im in the process of trying to gather my thoughts and supplies for a 56 column tank. I understand the plants should be the star of the show and tankmates like catfish and cichlids are a bad idea since they like to dig and push things around, so my question is, what would be a good idea?

Mollies, Gouramis, and Corys are some that come to mind, Mollies and Gouramis seem to be good about eating algae and not the plants.

Just about any tetra. South American Cichlids are a good choice as well. Do your homework though, not everybody on this combined list will play nice.

there are lots of stuff that will work and wont work. not all catfish are bad just like not all cichlids are bad for a planted tank.

bristlenose pleco in my tank does not harm any plants...
he cleans the algae off at the surface
