i dont think so, just dont mess with it, the sand acts like a filter.
the reason i say that is cause i used to move the sand a little to get rid of algea or stuff that grows on it, i ended up buying a sand sifting star and lots of hermit crabs, now my sand is always clean, hope this helps, im not an expert or anything.
