I'm picking up a used canister filter this afternoon, Aquatop CF500-UV.

What's the best way to clean it out and get it ready for my tank?

I already have an established tank with a AC70, and plan on running both for about a month to get the new filter seeded.

I used a toothbrush and hot water to scrape off old deposits. I think the most important area to clean would be the impeller housing, otherwise it could make a lot of noise during operation.

Should I let it dry out for a few days to just make sure there is no contaminants?

I suppose that couldn't hurt. If your end plan is to eventually not use the HOB and use this canister as your only filter; then you could just take the media out of the HOB and run it inside the new canister. Then you wouldn't need to run them both for any amount of time and would still retain the beneficial bacteria from the old HOB.
