i'm thinking my power filter for my five gallon planted tank gives a bit too much current for the plants. a few days ago it went out for no apparent reason, and when it was off, the tank looked so tranquill that it made me want to consider other options. what type of filter would be suggested for this sort of application? thank you.

If the bio load is small enough, you may be able to get away with no filter, though you should have some water movement.

An Aquaclear mini would work fine on this tank. It has a variable flow control.
