Hello all, newb here trying to setup my first canister filter which is a penn-plax 700 canister filter. I've googled the site and found several comments regarding the filter order setup, but i'm still a bit unclear and was hoping someone could either confirm or clear things up. So, in the box, filter media i received include:

1) Black Sponge
2) White fine Sponge
3) Carbon Bag
4) Another White sponge

So from my research (and not from the directions in the box since they do not make sense) i gather that the order should be from bottom to top:

Bottom basket
1)black sponge
2)white fine sponge

Top Basket
3) 2nd White Sponge
4)Carbon Bag

Does this order work? Some people recommend not using the 2nd white sponge in the Top Basket. Is this advisable? Lastly, there was another recommendation to buy Seachem purigan and put it at the top:

Amazon.com: Seachem Purigen 100ml: Pet Supplies

Thoughts on this as well? Thanks for the help in advance.

Not sure on your filter as far as how much it holds but mine is stacked like this.

Bottom ( water in )= cermaic rings ,
coarse foam pad ,
biological media ( sintered glass cocoa puffs ) ,
fine filter pad
Media bag with whatever you choose to use
and another fine filter pad on top

Mine have no media baskets so it is just all stacked on top of each other.
