I have a possible problem with my filter.

About once a minute I hear air hit the impeller and a moment later a large stream of bubbles comes out of the hose. I checked all my connections and the hoses for leaks and found none. Due to previous problems I keep my filter inside a 5 gallon bucket so I don't end up with a puddle if a leak does pop up.

Any ideas what may cause the air bubbles to form and how to get rid of them?

you have an air leak or there is a big bubble in the canister , it might be a pin hole in the hose , check the hose clamps they might be lose or cutting into the hose (more likly the intake hose), the gasket(seal) from the canister might be leaking air
