Fluval filter

Have a canister filter. I hear many thoughts on when to change filter media. I rinse it once a month but haven't changed any media. I'm curious to see the thoughts here. Advice is appreciated, thanks.

Btw...36 gallon. 18 small fish. Sand bottom. Fed once, sometimes two daily. Regular water changes....

What are you using as media? Generally you shouldn't change it unless it is literally falling apart or otherwise unusable.
