We just bought a 55 gallon tank. The employee told us to get the fluval for 45 gallons. I am wondering if we should have purchased the fluval for 70 gallon?? Also we bought a 150 watt Aqueon heater. Is that ok? Our tank is also Aqueon.

It is better to over filter a tank than under filter it. You could get away with the 45g one but you would probably need to do an extra water change and vacuum each week. I would return it and buy the more powerful one.

I also should ask what fish you are planning on keeping? That will also determine what sized filter.

at least get a filter that rated at 1.5 times your tank volume.
