So I have to tanks a 20 gallon and a 90 gallon. I work away from home so the wife takes care of the fish. We have been using "omega one-tropicalflakes" since we first got fish. As the small container we have was about empty she bought a big jar of it and gave it to the fist in the 20 gallon. Well within 5 mins half the fish in the tank had died all where in shock and all died within an hour!!!. Anyone ever hear of anything like this b4? The water is perfect and a water change was done right about 24hours ago now.

Water is 0,0,5. Water changes 20% every week to week n a half. Last night was a 50%.

N she fed the same amount she usually does. Only as much as they can eat in 1-2 mins. Only diffeeance was this was the new jar of food.

That is really strange. I've never heard of that happening before. But like angel fish girl said, check if there is an expiration date.

I tried to do a bit of research I found on yahoo.answers people were saying that flake food goes bad and needs to be replaced every month or so which is why they sell it in small containers. There was 3-5 people who said that. Shelved at stores however, with an undamaged seal, it can last years.
Yahoo answers is obviously not a reliable source but since so many people said the same thing, it is quite possible that you could use the help.

Was the seal damaged when you first got the flakes? Torn open anywhere? Any air getting to the flakes ahead of time?

Hmmmm I'll have to ask her about the seal. She usually would know better bit it could have just been a very small hole. The exp. Date is 2016

Well we bought the fish and the food from pet smart(only place to get fish within 40 miles of here). And they said they've never heard of it happening but that they would replace all the fish is the tank and pull all of this product off the shelves until they talk to the company.

Wow! That's unexpected from Walmart!

But that's great. Glad to know at least that worked out for you. That's wonderful they are considerate enough to replace all your fish

You mean petsmart?
That is great that they will actually replace all the fish and pull the food off the shelf. :)
I never though petsmart would replace ALL those fish that dies from food poisoning and past 1 week from purchase at store.

It supprized me as well. All they asked for was a water sample and replaced they without hesitation......it certainally prolly doesn't hurt that I've spent over $300 in there in the last month and they know me and the wife pretty well by now. We did a major water change, gravel vac'd the heck out of the tank, and cleaned all the plants n added the new fish. So far all is well.

Cool. Which fish survived the food poisoning? Did you stick with the same fish as before or did you add some new fish?

I had one fish survive, a female molly, and she's just starting to seem a little better. She would just baaaarley move around and was having a lot of trouble breathing. This morning she was swimming around in our bigger tank just fine tho. We evaquated her there after we found her still alive. The wife had found one more trying to hold on, another molly, b4 I got home and it was paralized from the middle back. She said that's what they all had done b4 dying. We restocked the tank and all of the new fish are doing fine

20 gallon tank had 6 Molly's and a dwarf gourami. We just went with the same fish just one extra molly. She is obsessed with them lol

Ummm.... Just to let you know but if the future, 7 mollies won't fit in a 20 gal. A Molly can grow to 5" max and 7 mollies + a dwarf gourami is overstocked. I didn't know they grew to 5" either until just a few months ago. :)
I was on another thread and many people have there mollies at 5" after around a year or so.

Eh it'll be ok. I got a 90 gallon in the living room. This is just my bedroom tank ;-).
