goldfish safe driftwood

Looking at manzanita branches and I'm thinking a combination of those branches with tall plants in the back will hide my overflow and return pipes.
But can the goldfish hurt themselves on manzanita?

What type of goldfish? Fancies with delicate eyes (moors, telescopes, bubbles) are prone to eye injury on anything sharp or pointed. Anyone with long, flowy finnage are at risk of ripping a fin.

Only thicker smooth wood without pointy tips. Cut and sand perhaps ?

Fancies can do major damage to themselves on anything sharp or pointy.
