Aren't gouramis and bettas similar? I have a 10g betta tank and a 20g with a gourami that I've had for a day and I already noticed a lot of similarities. If so why do people recommend putting them together? Wouldn't they just fish to the death with the betta losing due to is heavy and long flowing fins?

Keep calm and drum on

Bettas and Gouramis are both Anabantids but they are not the same specie so mixing them is possible. Possible, but it all depends on the species you are trying to mix. Some Gourami are more aggressive than others so they would not be good to mix together.
With today's bettas, there are many different personalities in them so it's also possible to find a betta that works with your fish and another that doesn't. It becomes a trial and error situation.

Hope this helps (y)
