I want to create better depth in my 5 and 10g. I've seen some lovely nanos in which the aquarist used driftwood to terrace the substrate. I have no driftwood (but i'm shopping around!) to terrace with, so are there other ways to terrace?

You could use some acrylic and aquarium safe silicon to make terraces to go in your tank. After you have made it, just put it in the tank and cover it with gravels. Don't know if this is really what you are looking for.

Thanks everyone! The filter media bag is an interesting thought!

You can also use rock and/or pond foam by Great Stuff.

Here's my retaining wall/barrier in the rough;

And here it is after a little sand has been applied;
