Is carbon safe in a planted tank?

I keep hearing mixed things about carbon and planted tanks some say it's bad it takes out your ferts and such and some say they have been running it for years with no problem.

Hello Nik...

Carbon will remove medications, but I've never heard of it removing fertilizers. Anyway, if you change a lot of tank water and do it frequently, you never need to use carbon. The water changes do far more for the tank than chemical medium.
