Java fern

I Bought a java fern plant form my LFS but it's leaves are a little brown and it's roots are too. Is this normal? Do I need to tie the plant to a rock or can I bury it in the gravel? What can I do to make the plant more healthy and green?

Tie it to a rock or wood. You can bury it but make sure the crown isn't covered or it will die. The roots are supposed to be dark brown/black...that's what they look like. Not sure about the leaves. Pics might help. Are you using ferts of any kind? Lighting?
