Java Moss?

Ok,so tomorow I am buying some java fern for my tank (that don't need fertelizers or high lighting or substrate)and I was thinking of creating a DIY java moss carpet(sandwiched between 2 peices of plastic canvas).Does the java moss really need the substrate or will it be fine with standard gravel?
