Jerry-Rigged Undergravel Filter

My 10gal aquarium is in need of recaulking so I have downsized my shrimp to a 5gal. There's only one problem, my submersible filter is a unsightly and a little bulky. If I bury it halfway and place media between the gravel and filter would it overwork itself?
This filter I'm using is ment for up to 30gal turtle tank.

I suggest you just get yourself a new HOB filter instead of using the one you have.
