Recently I noticed my sand is turning brown in some spots. Can this be extra food or what else can it be?

No it's a phase tanks go through. They'll go away after a couple days usually

It looks like it's growing a bit. I notice it about a week ago

water change will help some but it will dissipate on it's own . it usually lasts about 2 weeks
3 at most . I always ran my fingers through the sand like a rake it seemed to help getting the sand to clear up faster .

All live rock is dead coral skeleton one way or another. I have corals die on me and I rarely remove the skeleton, be it for the fact they there can be recovery with minimal tissue or it be just another piece of rock, but that is not a dead coral as there is still tissue. It is simply in poor shape as many open brains head down such a path.

I know about recovery. My corals have looked bad and recoverd. I just thought he would at least hide the skeleton in the rocks and get a new piece of coral. The skeleton looks like it has no chance of growing and tissue back.
