Nooooooo, can't be a good idea..doubt water would flow through it anyways..
 
Maybe some sort of pot scrubber or sponge would let water pass and filter fine particles? I know it would have to not having any soap or additives and be rinsed very well.

Oh yah! Lots if people use the cheapie pot scrubbers for filter media.. Just as long as they contain no additives like mildecides or moldicides
 
I'm guessing if it can't be used with chlorine bleach, it has another chemical in it that would have a reaction to the bleach... Definitely keep out of your tank
