My common Pleco sand or gravel?

Negative. And even if they did, it would cause issues. Their inside keep growing while their body stays the same size. I'm sure it would be painful. I'd take him back to your LFS and get a rubber lip or even a bristle nose

If you decide to upgrade and keep your common pleco try sand mine seems to luv sifting around like my corys do, just make sure he/she has access to driftwood also. Most plecos need dw in their diet to aid in digesting other foods. All my plecos rasp on wood alot throughout the day.
