Hey all.

I recently acquired a 55g wide aquarium. The stand is made of useless particle board that's falling apart/disintegrating so I'm planning a building a new stand for it.

The tank is a raised bottom tank (weight sits on the frame, not the bottom glass), so my plan is to use 1" plywood to sit the tank on and another piece of 4'x1' plywood for the foot, and support it with four 2x6s or 2x8s. Then add cross braces or brackets for stability. When the structural support is done add a few shelves and a door.

Any comments or suggestions?

Here's a good 2x4 model that seems to have become a standard in the hobby. I've built a few of these and they are definitely sturdy. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1400765513.331527.jpg
