This past week I got rid of the water polishing pads in my fluval 406 because I think they're pointless. In their place, I added more ceramic noodles to my filter media l. Since I added these, I have a huge spike in nitrites. Dangerously purple on the Api liquid test kit color scale. Is the sudden spike in nitrites because of the noodles? What should I do to lower the levels? I just did a water change and vacuumed about an hour ago.

How long has this tank been running? was it cycled?

anytime you see nitrite or ammonia present....water change with prime, they both should read 0. When you took out the water polishing pads you prob lost some of your beneficial bacteria.

I agree with quest, the polishing pads probably had nitrifying bacteria. Perhaps you will consider making a bucket algae scrubber? They would definitely help with your nitrogen spikes. Plus algae benefits from hard water.
