I have a dwarf gourami in a 60 gallon tank there used to be 2 now there is one one of my guppies was having a hard time swimming I moved it into a separated "net" and noticed the gourami kept going after the guppy who later on died .. I was told these were not aggressive fish and would be fine with other tropical fish? Was I given the wrong info?

Trichogaster lalius are not in the cichlid family. With reagrds to the advice you've been given they are not aggresive and rather shy towards the majority of other tropical fish with the exception of other anabantoids(other gourami's and betta's) and other gaudy fish such as Poecilia reticulata(guppies).

I don't know where your located at but here in the states these fish are generally all males, females are dull and boring looking. There may be some conspecific aggression between the two.
