Hello all,

I was wondering if I can pick some roots/ stones from the near by woods that I can use to decor my new 20 gallon tank thats under cycling now?

I know some of the wood and stone are not good for aquarium.

So what do you say? Is it recommended?

I can't speak to the wood, but I can for stones.

To see if they will be safe, drop white vinegar on them. If it reacts, don't use the stone. If it has bright colors, you will want to find out what mineral or metal is creating them.

To sterilize, use bleach. Don't boil rocks!

Sure. Thanks I will try the vinegar method. I in fact got a nice small piece of wood which I boiled. But not sure if should let it in.

Most stones should be fine but I guess the off-chance of a problem.

If it is from a stream it should be ok.

If it has sulphides (eg slate perhaps or volcanic rock), then one to avoid.

Sure thank you. Basically I have a pond near by and I saw a lot of stones/rocks and I am planning to get a few of them.
