Plecos Plecos Plecos!

Are plecos considered a 'hardy' fish? Do they get hardier as they age?

In my experience the common ones are...my mother had one when I was a teenager that not only got huge (as expected) but outlived every other fish in the tank (she was sick of keeping fish and waiting for them to die of old age to tear down the tank). She eventually gave up one waiting and gave it away to tear down the tank!

I've heard people say they aren't, but I've always wondered if those are the same people who don't feed them since they're bottom feeders...
