I've heard of submerged powerhead failures, resulting in electrical arcing (blue "flames"), smoke, bubbles, etc. and ultimately the loss of aquarium contents and/or fires.

Does anyone have firsthand experience on this type of aquarium failure? Photos? Still have failed motors?

I'm an engineer investigating aquarium fires and looking for good info on the subject.

Thanks,
Craig

Not personally. Closest I had was a titanium heater that became less than adequately submerged and exploded.

how can a fire start underwater? there is not enough air to feed it.

as well you won't get smoke or bubbles unless there is a dead short and then your breaker should pop, unless you have poor electrical work then you'll kill your tank and unless you cut the power you will kill yourself if you touch it.

a smart thing to also do is put your system on a GFI
