Purigen turns red??

Okay, that was weird. I was doing tank maintenance on one of my aquaria today and checked to if the Purigen needed changing. Instead of the dark brown I expected, the resin had turned brick red. I've never seen that before. Water quality was fine, other than high nitrates (hence the maintenance), and the fish are healthy and active.

Anyone have an idea of what happened? :confused:
 
I've seen this before .
It could be your purigen is exhausted depending on how many times you have re charged it .
For me once red it did not re charge to bright white or last as long again as it did before .
