Question about initially planting

I read the directions on planting and took the bulbs out. The directions just said to put 3/4 of them in the substrate. so i did that. and then it occurred to me does it matter which end or directions they face? one of the bulbs is just a black rock looking shape, doesnt look at all like it matters which way they go in but im new to this. sorry if you feel dumber for reading this but just wanna know if i goofed it up already so i can change them around if need be while the tank is cycling waiting for fish to be put in.

i tend just to toss them in the tank until it starts to sprout. this way you can figure out what way is up.

I do too. The ones I've had rooted themselves (I got some apon. bulbs)
