Quick question about mixing cichlids

So I have a blue Hap and yellow lab if they decided to make babies would they babies come out with color? I was reading that if you mix the same genus but different fish that the babies would come out ugly everytime. That can't be true, can it?

Male Malawi eye-biters (Dimidiochromis compressiceps) are blue haps.

It's in french, but the 5th photo from the bottom is a yellow lab x malawi eye biter hybrid: horreurs hybrides

Lots of other cichlid hybrids on that page if you're familiar with the scientific names.
