Should I buy it?

At my LFS there is a tank with several absolutely stunning guppies labeled "Platinum Halfmoon." I really want to buy two males to make future generations of fancier guppies (right now I just have rather boring common ones). Will breeding the fancy males with common females produce fancy fry? Also, they are very expensive ($20 for a pair) and I don't know whether it is worth that much.

I think it would be a long time before you'd get your $20 investment back. Females can hold sperm for months so you'd be getting a lot of 'who knows what' fry for quite a while. I think it would be better to have females from the same line, but that would cost more money.

I just found out that the LFS also has guppies that are only $4 and not as fancy, but still look incredible. I'm going to get some of those if my last male guppy dies.
