slate rock

Ok, I think this is slate. I got it off the beach here and wondering if it's ok to put in my tank. It's got some reddish-brown spots... I put cider vinegar on it and no bubbles. What do you think?

I don't believe that to be slate. It'd be a good idea to boil it and make sure nothings alive on it, then let it soak in a tub of water for a while and monitor what it does to the pH and kH of the water. That will help determine if it's leeching anything into the water column.
