Sponge or filter floss

Hi is it true sponges can cause nitrate outbreak? How long can aquaclear foam last?

What do you prefer floss or sponge.

The purpose of bio media, be it sponge or anything else is to produce nitrate. As a bio media the sponge is superior to floss, in my view, as it doesn't compact when cleaned. AC sponge inserts last many years. You don't replace them until they start to crumble.
