Starting a nano reef!

Hi everyone! I've decided to try and start a nano reef tank. I am starting with a 8 gallon. Where is a good place to start cycling it? What is a good base to use (live sand maybe?)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also happen to live in hawaii, so maybe I can collect some stuff from the Pacific Ocean.

Not too well. I was having a hard time deciding what to use as substrate. I decided to go with argagonite. I need to start cycling my tank but I do have media from my other tanks. Would you happen to have any tips?

Throw a cocktail shrimp into some panty hose and toss it in. Cycle with easy clean up.
