Strange fish behavior

In my 72 gal tank, it is loaded with live rock, and a giant conch shell i bought years ago. All my fish are peaceful, yet they compete for control over the conch. And at night, they make peace, and crowd around the conch and sleep. My question is "Why?".

Is there somehow i can stop them from competing and spread around the tank, because more than half the tank is empty because they compete for the conch?
