While reading in preparation for making the switch to a planted aquarium, I saw an odd bit of info with no explanation. It was a recommendation to replace T5 bulbs every 6-12 months. I've had a T5 over my unplanted tank for 12 months now. In fact, it's second hand, so who knows how long it's been in use. Obviously, it's still giving out light.

So, why is it recommended to replace a T5 every 6-12 months? Does the quality of light change? Is this just a ploy to sell more bulbs? Thanks in advance.

Definitely not a ploy to sell more tubes...the performance declines in that window of the 6-12 mo period..I'd suggest led fixtures for extended life&performance...

Recently I changed my year old T5HO bulbs on one of the 55g tanks and when I added the new bulbs they were so much brighter even my grandkids noticed. The plants also took off after putting in the new bulbs.
