I am thinking about switching to a Tanganyikan tank because of my very hard water and high ph it is 8.6-8.8 out of the tap after the 24hr aeration test. I have some live bearer fry that I am raising and I can't switch the tank until they are ready to go so I have some time to prepare and learn. I know nothing about cichlids so I am a beginner with these. I love a planted tank and I would love to keep it planted if at all possible. My tank is a 37g tall. I wanted to add some rock but with the high ph I will admit to being scared to put it in there. Will I have that option if I go with the tanganyikan? What fish would be good for my tank? I would like a community tank with lots of color. Any help would really help a tun!

Tangyanikan cichlids will dig up any plants. Shellies are good fish to start with though.
