Even though blue tangs are aggressive is it a bad idea to get one?
 
I see you have a 20 gal. Just so you know they need fairly large aquariums. 100 gal would be about the bare minimum.
 
Rambo....keep in mind that you are talking about a fish that gets 12" in length....a much larger then 20g tank will be needed, and a lot of LR for grazing!
 
even if we bought 1 that is extremely small? But how long does it take too get really big?
 
They are not for small tanks- Period. Sorry. Not only do they grow quickly when cared for properly, they are very vulnerable to stress and disease. They are open water grazers in nature and need A LOT of swimming room. It's challenging enough to keep them long term in the proper environment, let alone something so small. Best to get something you could be successful with, for you and the animal.
 
I whole-heartedly agree. Sorry...this fish is just not suited for a 20gal tank regardless of size.
