I have a 29 gallon tank and my plan is to get 1 firemouth and 8-10 tiger barbs. would this be ok?? the lady at the lfs suggested i get 2 firemouths.

I would suggest 6-7 tiger barbs.

They are very active and needs lots of swimming space.
8-10 would be too many for that size tank.

firemouths are best in pairs. So two should be fine.
Just make sure there are several caves and hiding places.

If you wanted a pair 29 gallons is the absolute minimum IMO. No other fish can go in there because they will be highly territorial and aggressive.

I'd keep one firemouth and 8-10 barbs. I disagree that they do better in pairs, and in this situation I believe keeping a pair would only complicate matters. You won't want to deal with the aggression from a pair if they decide to spawn.
