The Southern Maryland Marine Aquarium Society (www.smmas.org) is proud to host the Third Annual Southern Maryland Reef Symposium featuring noted speaker and author Anthony Calfo* on November 10th, 2007. This event will be held at the Calvert Marine Museum from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm located near beautiful Solomon’s Island Maryland. The pre-registration admission fee of $25 ($10 for students 12-18, $4 for children under 12) is available until October 26th; ticket prices increase to $30 thereafter and at the door. Included in this price is admission to the Calvert Marine Museum featuring wildlife from the Chesapeake Bay, a petting area of rays, interactive displays, as well as the history of the Chesapeake. Check out their website, www.calvertmarinemuseum.com for directions and all the activities that are available.

The doors open at 10:00am; check in at the front desk to receive your Reef Symposium passes and admission stickers for the museum. Tour the museum and enjoy the “saltwater” tank displays of the local Chesapeake Bay (who knew seahorses lived in the Chesapeake?), there is so much to see and do here you may want to join the museum and come back again!

There will be plenty of food for everyone as well as one of the best Marine Aquarium raffles in the state; sumps, skimmers, lighting systems, gift certificates, it’s all going to be there! Vendors will also be on hand selling live coral as well as dry goods at very reasonable prices.

*Anthony Calfo was born in Hawaii and lives in Pennsylvania. He is a lifelong aquarist and an aquarium industry professional that has worked the better part of the last decade as a commercial coral farmer and wholesaler, producing cultured reef invertebrates in a greenhouse environment for the ornamental and zoological trade.

Anthony has authored the reef aquarium books, "Book of Coral Propagation, Volume 1" (ReadingTrees.com) & “Reef Invertebrates”, and numerous articles for print and electronic journals at large. He travels frequently to visit organizations and clubs to present information on the aquatic sciences. Anthony co-founded the Pittsburgh Marine Aquarist Society with the inimitable Bob Dolan. Schooled at Carnegie-Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, he has degree in English Literature.

Anthony Calfo will be doing a lecture on the subject "Things You Thought You Knew". A comprehensive reef-keeping discussion covering hardware and husbandry with an address of the many common mistakes newbies and experts alike tend to make. After our lunch break he will conduct a workshop on how to save damaged coral, a video camera will be set up so all can clearly see what he will be doing on stage. Cool huh?

Also, the Raffle prizes are starting to come in... MH sets, a custom made nano tank, protein skimmer, salt and more salt, GC's... the list is growing. We will update the raffle prize pool more often as the 10th of November draws closer.

This is going to be one great show folks, please buy your tickets as soon as you can so we can get a good head count for the food folks.

We will also have 3 vendors on hand, 2 wet and 1 dry. Our 2 wet George from CMAS, Jeff from Reef Chief, and our dry vendor, GetTankedAquariums.

Three Vendors will also be available selling live coral and dry goods at reasonable prices.

For those that may have missed it, Anthony Calfo will be giving a talk on "What You Thought You Knew", followed by lunch, then a demonstration on "Saving Damaged Coral". We plan to have a video camera showing close ups of Anthony's work so everyone can see what he is doing on the big screen. A short question and answer session will follow that you can use to ask anything you want.

Anthony will also have his books, posters and other items to sell at the show that he will be more than happy to autograph for you. So come on out and meet the legend, a man that has given so much to the hobby and freely shares his knowledge.
