Thinking about LED for 10g

Are LED lights better or worse or doesn't it matter? I know they can be pricey, but I saw one in Meijer for $30 (10 gal). Seemed low on the price side, and I believe you get what you pay for, so I am asking about it here before seriously looking at it. Do LED lights always need a glass top, or can I use a regular cover? What else should I know before considering this? No real plants or fancy fish in my tank. Just basic lighting needed. Thanks for your help as always.
