Hey there. I recently upgraded my freshwater tank from a 30g to a 80g. I transferred the water and filled with fresh treated water. That was one week ago. Yesterday I purchased a eheim 2028 used from a local ad. I cleaned the filter and replaced the filter floss. Ever since there has been small white dust like particles floating around and I don't believe it is an algae bloom as the water is not cloudy. My question - what are these particles and why does my filter not pick them up? Thanks in advance. I was using a fluval 206 on my 30g and it worked great.

Not sure i can really answer your question but the first thing that popped into my mind was you just bought the filter yesterday but how long has the filter been running with the partials in the water? Might help else that comes along answer your question better

The filter was up and running for three years. When I purchased the filter it was still hooked up to the sellers tank. The sellers tank was pristine. I just don't get it :(

Are you sure it's not just micro bubbles from air still in the filter and just coming out?

I suppose anything is possible, although I don't think so. I have shaken and tilted the filter numerous times and there seems to be no air left in it. But I guess maybe. I'll leave it running for awhile, since I have all but given up on it. If it doesn't correct itself I'll maybe just look into another filter

So I added my fluval 206 to the tank and now run both filters. The eheim 2028 is filled with bio filtration and the 206 is strictly mechanical. The particles I think I have narrowed down. The appears once I started using and upstairs faucet instead of the basement. The basement tap is the first tap on the water line. I poured a glass of water from the upstairs faucet and voila, there were the particles. The particles are calcium buildup inside my pipes. My house is 20 years old and have copper pipes. From now on I'll quit being lazy and carry my water upstairs for my water changes.

Glad you figured out the issue. I never would have thought about it being that. Thanks for updating It might help someone else down the road. On a side note I just added a fluval 306 as a second filter on my tank and thought I was having the same issue but as a previous post said when I looked close I could see that it was micro bubbles and they cleared up after about a day.
