Tropical community vs. Cichlids vs. Discus vs. What-Have-You

I'm a tropical community fish person myself - born and raised that way, so to speak, yet I hear left and right that cichlids are addicting, as are several other types of setups. I have no idea what any of the other disciplines are like, so what are your thoughts?

The reason I ask is I've been eyeing a 30 gallon long on Craigslist, and not sure if I'd like 2 tanks of a kind...

if you're wanting any cichlids other than dwarfs or shellies, a 30 is too small
