A sump is a large filter that is attached to a tank . They are most commonly used in salt water tanks. Im sure google has pictures for you

sump- a low space that collects any undesirable liquids or chemicals. most houses have a sump pump to keep the basements from flooding and sump pumps on aquariums are used to remove unwanted chemicals and extra filtration
