What is this algae?

My 55g dirted tank has started to get a grey/black algae growing on the sand and even below the sand visible on the front glass. The tank is less than a month old. When I pulled up a dead plant its roots were covered in the same black stuff. Is this even algae? A blackout seemed not to really effect it.

If I had to guess, I'd guess cyano, but it's just a guess. What does it smell like? Some cyano is blackish. It may take more than one blackout.
