white residue

I just received a 10 gal. tank that had not been used in a while. On the outside of the light hood and on the filter "housing" their is a white residue. I am cleaning everything with plain ole tap water. When it dries the white stuff is still there. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this? What is it?

try a vinegar solution, if it's a calcium type deposite vinegar will clean it right up.

yeah sounds like calcium. Previous person probably had relatively hard water. Might be unsightly but it won't harm anything.
